I began writing A Year of Smoke at the end of 2020, when the Holiday Farm Fire was rampantly burning throughout Central Oregon. During this time, ominous orange skies, and the raining down of fragments of ash and burning leaves in Eugene, my home, were common. These fires culminating at the end of the first year of the pandemic influenced the title and mood of this piece.
