Dawn upon the Perseids

We dread daybreak
this summer's night alight.

Through scorched hillocks
humming hymns
we walk below the august showers
streaks of white-green fire
swiftly radiate
then fade from sight
as deep as is from which they cast
their shadows round the firmament
so bright is their impermanence tonight.

Between the stars
spaced far apart
we long to roam the dark.

But rose-gold morning's sun does rise
aglow to burn starfields above.
Ah, still we are not brave enough
to dream beneath well-lighted skies.
